“Walk it off…. rub some dirt in it.” It sounds silly, but man does it make a point. Yeah, getting your ideas swatted down like picnic flies hurts, but it doesn’t mean you’re out of the game dummy!
Sometimes, it’s all about how you present your idea. Try this 3-act powerplay.
Act 1: the need.
Find a gap in what the customer wants. Then tell the customer how your idea will complete the picture.
Act 2: the idea.
Take a deep breath and dive right in. Look for their reaction… excited, unimpressed, etc. And adlib as needed. Take another deep breath.
Act 3: the close.
Encourage the customer to mold, sculpt and transform the idea. Suck up your pride. Winning the account outweighs your precious ego.
It’s that simple. Just be prepared to justify all ideas — even if it’s just a one-on-one with your boss. They must be smart, creative and relevant to the customer.
