Facebook: dead end for marketers

Are you surprised? Wherever there’s a herd of people, marketers will move in like your mooching best friend. When Facebook opened its door for developers to create social applications for users, the drool puddles from established brands like Coca-Cola, Ford and Nike overflowed. Facebook was thought to offer the perfect opportunity to move beyond banners to provide “branded utility.”

Well, those brands are flopping in the Facebook arena. In fact, they could be doing long-term brand damage. Connecting to customers is getting harder and harder, so it makes sense for brands to claw at new technologies in hopes for gaining market share. And I’m all for that. They just need to find the right channel. iPhone? I’m just saying.
